Shortland Street: Behind the scrubs

Shortland Street is one of New Zealand’s longest-running TV dramas. Set in a hospital and on air for more than 30 years, the show has launched the careers of countless actors whilst creating a lineup of legacy characters that have been with the show from it’s inception.

The show was getting a face-lift, entering a new era: New Blood to draw in younger audiences, whilst trying to retain the original fans. So we created a companion content series for the same streaming platform that airs the show, TVNZ+.

Behind the Scrubs is an unscripted talk show that brings together both legacy and new cast members to talk openly about their experiences on the show, sharing stories from on and off set and reflecting on what it’s like to be part of one of New Zealand’s longest running TV shows.

Co-creating and art directing this series, across everything from set design to the campaign around the show and post-production, opened up a new way for me to apply all my skills of making advertising, to creating an unscripted content piece for a streaming platform.
